Overview

What Eastern Suburbs homeowners need to understand first

Sydney's Eastern Suburbs sit within some of the city's most tree-sensitive council areas. Whether your property backs onto Centennial Park, sits in a heritage conservation zone in Woollahra, or occupies a compact Bondi terrace, the rules around tree removal are stricter here than in many other parts of Sydney.

That doesn't mean removal is impossible — far from it. But it does mean that getting the process right matters. Skipping the permit step can expose you to fines of up to $1.1 million for significant trees, and removing a tree without approval can leave you liable for restoration costs too.

This guide walks through everything you need to know: when approval is required, what it costs, how to spot a tree that genuinely needs to go, and why using a qualified arborist protects both your property and your wallet.

At a glance — your key questions

Council Permits

Do you need approval?
Know your council's rules

The Eastern Suburbs spans four local government areas, each with its own tree management policies. Understanding which council governs your property is the essential first step.

Waverley Council

Covers Bondi, Bronte, Tamarama, Clovelly and Waverly. Significant tree protections apply to trees over 5m in height or with a trunk circumference over 30cm at 1m from ground level. A Development Application (DA) or Tree Works Application is required for most removals.

Randwick City Council

Covers Coogee, Maroubra, Kingsford, Randwick and surrounds. Trees over 4m tall or with a trunk diameter over 100mm typically require a Tree Preservation Order (TPO) permit. Heritage areas may carry additional restrictions.

Woollahra Council

Covering Paddington, Double Bay, Edgecliff and Rose Bay, Woollahra operates one of Sydney's most rigorous tree protection frameworks. Many suburbs fall within heritage conservation areas, which adds a further layer of approval requirements.

Bayside Council

Covering Mascot, Botany, Eastlakes and surrounding areas, Bayside's tree policies follow NSW planning standards. Removal of significant trees still requires a formal application and often an arborist's report to support the case.

Important: Penalties for removing a tree without approval in NSW can reach up to $1.1 million for significant trees under the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act. Even trees on private property are protected. Always confirm approval before any works begin — Sydney Tree Co can assist with the application process.

Safety

Warning signs your tree
may need to come down

Not every tree that looks rough needs to be removed. But some conditions represent genuine risk to your property and family. A qualified arborist can assess these properly.

01

Significant dead wood or crown die-back

Large dead branches — especially those suspended above paths, rooflines, or outdoor living areas — are a serious hazard. In forestry these are known as "widowmakers." Dead wood accounts for over 1 in 10 chainsaw-related fatalities annually in Australia.

02

Bark falling from major branches

Seeing large sections of bark sloughing off a branch is a reliable indicator of dead wood. Combined with no new spring growth, this points to a branch — or entire tree — that needs urgent professional assessment.

03

Roots affecting foundations or services

Root systems from large Eastern Suburbs trees — particularly Moreton Bay figs and camphor laurels — can undermine foundations and compromise sewer lines. If you've noticed cracks in paving or recurring blockages, roots may be the culprit.

04

Storm damage or structural lean

A sudden lean, particularly after wind events, can indicate root or trunk failure. Eastern Suburbs properties near the coast are especially exposed to salt-laden winds that accelerate structural stress in susceptible species.

05

Pest infestation or fungal disease

Fungal brackets growing from the trunk are often a sign of internal decay. Borers and other pests can hollow out a structurally sound-looking tree within seasons. Once disease affects more than half the tree, removal often becomes inevitable.

06

Proximity to power lines

Trees growing into or near overhead power lines require specialist management — work that must be co-ordinated with Ausgrid. Sydney Tree Co is experienced in managing these situations safely and in compliance with utility requirements.

Pricing

Understanding the cost
of tree removal

Pricing in the Eastern Suburbs can vary considerably based on a number of site-specific factors. Here's what drives the cost — and what realistic budgets look like.

Typical price ranges — Eastern Suburbs
Small tree (under 5m)
$350 – $700
Medium tree (5–10m)
$700 – $1,500
Large tree (10–20m)
$1,500 – $3,500
Very large / complex tree
$3,500+
Stump grinding (add-on)
$180 – $450
Arborist report (if required)
$250 – $600

All prices are indicative. Every job is quoted on-site and in-person by our team — no hidden fees.

What affects the final price

1

Tree size and species

Height, trunk diameter, canopy spread, and wood density all directly affect how long the job takes and what equipment is needed.

2

Access and site conditions

Eastern Suburbs properties often have limited side access. Narrow easements, heritage sandstone walls, and compact courtyards can require specialised rigging and increase costs.

3

Proximity to structures or utilities

Trees overhanging roofs, near pools, or adjacent to power lines require a more methodical sectional removal approach, which adds time.

4

Debris disposal and clean-up

Full disposal of timber and green waste is included in most quotes. Some customers retain mulch — let us know and we'll factor it in.

Why it matters

Why professional tree removal
protects your home

It's tempting to see tree removal as a DIY job. In most Eastern Suburbs scenarios, it isn't — and the risks of getting it wrong are significant.

Insurance protection

If an unlicensed operator damages your home or injures themselves on your property, the liability falls on you. Sydney Tree Co carries $20M public liability cover and full workers' compensation — protecting you from day one.

Council permit assistance

Our team understands the permit requirements across Waverley, Randwick, Woollahra and Bayside councils. We can help prepare the documentation and arborist reports needed to support your application.

Qualified arborists on every job

Every job is managed by a certified arborist with TAFE qualifications and field experience. We provide proper assessments, not guesswork — and our team stays on-site from start to finish.

Right equipment for the Eastern Suburbs

Urban properties require specialist rigging, elevated work platforms, and sometimes crane access. We have the equipment to handle complex removals in tight inner-city blocks without damage to surrounding structures.

Clean site, every time

We don't leave until the job is done and the site is clean. All timber and green waste is removed. Customer reviews consistently call out how tidy we leave properties — including the pool and garden areas.

Honest advice, not a hard sell

Sometimes a tree doesn't need to be removed — it needs to be pruned, treated, or managed. We'll always tell you the most appropriate solution for your situation, even if that means less work for us.
